Much changed since Gordon Stein's 1985 1st edition, the second edition contains over 500 entries on topics that discuss unbelief within major religions, atheism, agnosticism, secular humanism, secularism, and the relationship between a non-religious credo and major social reform movements. Many of the entries are biographies, including those of Voltaire, suffragist Lois Waisbrooker, Nietzche, and historian Edward Gibbon. Another frequent entry category is "unbelief", including unbelief as it is displayed or enacted in countries, religions, philosophical concepts, and other concepts or practices, such as birth control. The result is wide-ranging and certainly thought-provoking. Most of the contributors are academics at institutions worldwide, others are independent scholars, writers, and journalists.
