Before he died in 2002, Wansbrough (Semitic studies, London U.) had completed this analysis of the Quran using instruments and techniques of Biblical criticism. In the first three chapters, he sets out his proposed three-fold division of the study of Islamic monotheism into scriptural canon, prophetology, and sacred language.
