After an introduction tracing the history of the philosophical movement of pragmatism, Haack (philosophy and law, U. of Miami) presents 33 examples of pragmatist writings, both classical and more contemporary. In her presentation of classic works, she includes some of the logic, metaphysics, and theory of inquiry of Charles Sanders Peirce; the philosophy of religion, metaphysics, and ethics of William James; the political philosophy, philosophy of education, epistemology, and philosophy of art of John Dewey; and the social psychology of George Herbert Mead. For the newer workers, she has sought to achieve representative balance between the radical and conservative branches of modern pragmatism.
