Grivas (orthopedic surgery, Thriasio general hospital, Greece) and his contributors from the Society on Scoliosis Orthopedic and Rehabilitation Treatment (SOSORT) report on the current state of scoliosis research and practice, including recent advances in prediction, diagnosis, surgical treatment and the use of braces and other devices. Based upon materials presented at the Fifth International Conference on Conservative Management of Spinal Deformities in Athens Greece April 2008 these papers cover schools screening for prevention, physiotherapy, braces, inclusive criteria for conservative treatment, clinical evaluation classification, studies of the surface after brace application, and SOSORT guidelines. Specific topics include the role of scoliosis in the Human Genome Project, mechanical modulation, clinical evaluation during adolescence, criteria for conservative management, intensive outpatient rehabilitation based on Schroth methods, function in idiopathic scoliosis, timing of bracing, different types of braces, cosmetics after bracing, and the quality of life after conservative treatment.
