In their introduction, editors Srivastava (National Cancer Institute) and Grizzle (U. of Alabama) emphasize that over the last several decades molecular analysis of tumors has played an increasing role, and "molecular pathology" has emerged as its own discipline. Understanding of the transformation of normal cells to malignant cells offers increased potential for early detection and for differentiation of lesions that will progress from those that will not. The specifics are presented in contributions addressing the scientific concepts, pathology, and genetics of early cancer, and the molecular pathology of bladder cancer, breast disease, central nervous system disorders, childhood cancer, colorectal neoplasia, cutaneous melanoma, and ovarian cancer, among others. The concluding two chapters discuss bioinformatics, and issues in collecting, processing, and storing human tissues to support biomedical research.
