Using the methods of comparative historical sociology, Kohli (international affairs, Princeton U.) examines whether, as is often claimed in the literature, state sovereignty has eroded as a result of globalization. He finds that states practicing cohesive-capitalist strategies such as Korea and to some extent Brazil are most effective at promoting industrialization, while those practicing neo-paternalism, such as Nigeria are the least successful, with those with fragmented-multiclass cultures (such as India and to some extent Brazil) falling somewhere in the middle. He organizes his thoughts by state, explaining Korea's success in terms of its colonial origins and political events, Brazil in terms of its invited dependency, India in terms of its adherence to slow and steady growth, and Nigeria in terms of its inability to shed the neo-paternalism originally imposed on it by colonialization.
