In his earlier work, Liberal Pluralism, Galston (School of Public Affairs, U. of Maryland) presented a normative theory of the limits of government that rested on the recognition of multiple sources of authority in social life, the value pluralism of Isaiah Berlin, and expressive liberty analogous to free exercise of religion but covering comprehensive non-religious and religious conceptions of human life. In this book, he responds to criticisms of Liberal Pluralism by providing a more explicit philosophical justification for the above principles and a deeper examination of their practical applications for key aspects of public action and public life.
