Written by the late Radu (formerly of the Foreign Policy Research Institute and the Hoover Institution on War, Revolution, and Peace), this volume warns that immigration of Muslims into Europe threatens the Islamization of Europe, a danger that will be impossible to avoid if Europeans stick to their misguided policies of multiculturalism. Like others of its essentialist ilk, the book largely treats Islam as an undifferentiated whole and elevates religion/culture over all other categories of identity. In furtherance of its argument, it commits mistakes of conflation, treating, for example, the concept of the ummah, the worldwide community of the Islamic faithful, a concept held by almost all Muslims, as basically the same as the wish for a renewed Caliphate, or single state ruling over all Islamic lands, which is an idea that is not even shared among all or even most adherents of political Islam. It also commits errors of omission, for example as when it compares issues of assimilation for Islamic communities in Europe to issues of assimilation for Hispanics in the United States, when a more apt comparison would be to, say, the highly-integrated and well-established Muslim communities in Dearborn, Michigan (or even to more recent arrivals). Indeed, one might even begin to suspect bad faith in the argument when one reads assertions such as the idea that Turkey cannot be used as an example of a secular Muslim society because many Islamists disdain Kamal Ataturk, thus ignoring the views of millions of Turkish Muslims. While the tensions between newly arrived Muslim immigrants and their European host countries are surely real, if over-exaggerated by folks like Radu, neither the complex causes of those tensions (which are only partly cultural/religious and differ markedly across countries and communities) nor solutions are to be found here.
