Shi shares four major theoretical breakthroughs he made while investigating uncertainty modeling in spatial data and spatial analysis: advances in spatial object representation from determindedness to uncertainty-based representations of geographic objects in geographic information science, from uncertainty modeling for static spatial data to dynamic spatial analyses, from uncertainty modeling for spatial data to spatial models, and from error description of spatial data to spatial data quality control. At a more detailed scale, he considers such topics as sources of uncertainty in spatial data and analysis, mathematical foundations, modeling positional and attribute uncertainty, modeling uncertain topological relationships, positional uncertainties in overlay and buffer analysis, improved interpolation methods for digital elevations models, and metadata on spatial data quality.
