Paul (a social scientist working at the Pittsburgh office of the RAND Corporation) has conceived this text as a reference resource concerning contemporary doctrine and practice for US military information operations (IO) and supporting and related capabilities. The purpose of the work is fundamentally descriptive, although some observations about current problems are included. Opening chapters cover the history of IO and provide a summary of contemporary IO. His discussion is organized into sections on information content--psychological operations (PSYOP), deception (MILDEC), and operations security (OPSEC); information systems--electronic warfare (EW) and computer network operations (CNO); and related military capabilities--public affairs (PA), civil-military operations (CMO), and military support to public diplomacy (MSPD).
