Gender scholars have recently pointed out the reasons besides religious fervor that might have induced women to become missionaries at the dawn of the 20th century, but no similar study has been made of men. Church historian Sidenvall (Lund U.) takes four young working class Swedish men as case studies to explore the issue. Between a review of the Swedish missionary revival and an exploration of consequences and departures of masculinizing missions, he discusses Olof Bingmark as a public missionary and a domestic man, Otto Öberg extending a male private sphere, the making of Frans August Larson into a domestic adventurer, and Alfred Fagerhold and education and the problem of missionary self-making.
