In the January 1999 meeting of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering), the Task Force on Data for Modeling Transient Analysis was mandated to produce a series of papers that would aid users of transient simulation tools in the selection of techniques and procedures for determining the parameters to be specified in transient models, which is one of the most difficult and time-consuming tasks of many transient studies. These papers were eventually published in the July 2005 issue of the IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery. Martinez-Velasco (electronic engineering, U. Politécnica de Catalunya, Spain) presents this volume as an extension and expansion of the special Transactions issue, wherein are detailed current procedures and techniques for the determination of transient parameters for six basic power components: overhead line, insulated cable, transformer, synchronous machine, surge arrester, and circuit breaker. The text also include appendices that provide updated techniques for the identification of linear systems from frequency responses, which can be useful for determining parameters and for fitting frequency-dependent models of various components, and review the capabilities and limitations of the most common simulation tools.
