Chinese literature of the 20th century is primarily concerned with a quest for modernity and revolution, according to mainstream literary history in both China and the West. Li challenges that view by teasing out some literary trends from the New Culture Movement to the late 1980s and early 1990s. She draws heavily from cultural anthropology, and the core chapters cover anthropological themes: the development of studies in Chinese mythology, May Fourth folklorists' translation and introduction of the European and Japanese folklore movements, and the development of studies on cultural ethnology.
