Wang (foreign languages and applied linguistics, National Taipei U., Taiwan) analyzes themes of "home" in the novels of Kazuo Ishiguro, and notes the preponderance of "homeless strangers" and how they search for a place of familiarity within their environment. The author examines each of Ishiguro's six novels and explains the relationship between these characters and socio-political norms, illustrating the novelist's concept of a "floating world" and the need to position home as a priority. While the bulk of this analysis is aimed at literature students and scholars, the multi-cultural aspects of Wang's ideas may appeal to those interested in sociology, Asian studies and linguistics.
