Revising his 2004 Ph.D. dissertation in religious philosophy at La Trobe University-Bendigo, Itter (religious education, Girton Grammar School) argues that the scholarly attention given to Clement (c. 150-215) and what he appropriated from Hebrew and Greek traditions falls short of establishing the logical outcomes of his theology and the crucial role that the gnostic and gnosis played in the Christian community. He focuses on the Stromateis, its literary form, and whether or not Clement intended it as a treatise on teaching. His topics are teaching, learning, and writing in second and third century Alexandria; the number and sequence of his works; logic and enigma; the doctrine of anamnesis; physiology, cosmogony, and theology; and the doctrine of apokatastasis.
