Drotner (literature, culture, and media studies, U. of Southern Denmark) and Livingstone (media and communications, London School of Economics and Political Science) assemble 30 articles on children's and young people's media cultures around the world. An international and interdisciplinary group of scholars in journalism and media studies, sociology, education, communication, and other fields integrate childhood and media studies approaches to examine the differences and similarities between cultures around the world, considering media cultures historically, and public concerns relating to family life and whether children can tell the difference between reality and fantasy. They examine media such as mobile phones, video games, and films, as well as child development and children as consumers. Subsequent chapters address different cultures, from South Africa to Asia to South America, including aspects such as class and gender, and current issues such as new literacies, parental guidance, peer pressure, regulation, and the commodification of youth culture.
