Rosemann (philosophy, U. of Dallas) has edited and written a second collection of essays devoted to early commentators on the Sentences of Peter Lombard as a continuation and supplement to the first volume (published in 2002). The commentaries discussed were written between the 12th and 15th centuries, with a chapter on the complete gloss of Pseudo-Poitiers, 6 chapters on 13th-century and 4 chapters on 14th-century writers, and 1 chapter on the young Martin Luther. The chapters offer consistent treatment of each commentator, discussing the manuscript tradition, the structure of the gloss or commentary, the author's method, and the larger philosophical context of their work. Glosses and commentaries by the following thinkers are included: Robert Kilwarby, Thomas Aquinas, Hugh of St.-Cher, Alexander of Hales, Stephen Langton, Roger Roseth, and Peter of Candia. Rosemann (philosophy, medieval studies, U. of Dallas, Texas) contributes a concluding essay on the tradition of the Sentences. A bibliography, name and manuscript indexes are provided. This is a superb resource for graduate students and scholars of medieval intellectual thought. A projected third volume will continue the project into later time periods and other neglected areas.
