Corbett (education, Acadia U.) presents a case study of education in the coastal community of Digby Neck, Nova Scotia, that considers who stayed in the town after schooling, who left, and why, and how the education system is set up to take young people out of the community and into opportunities outside of it. The research project began in 1997 and continued through 2001 and surveyed students who attended a local elementary school from 1957 to 1992 and educators who taught from the 1940s to the 1960s. He examines three different periods from 1963 to 1998: the first as dependent on the fishery industry, the second as a boom time in which the trade was industrialized, and the third as a downsizing period, with consideration of its effects on education.
