Afnán (1875-1951) was born into the house of Báb and raised by his widow; and he spent a year with Bahá'ullá and ten years in contact with his son. As the hereditary custodian of the House of the Báb in the city of Shíraz in the Iranian province of Fars, he was asked to write a history of the early years of the religion from material. He begins with the birth in 1819 of the man who would be known as the Báb, and ends with the political reforms and upheavals of 1919-10.
