First published in 1929, Ulrich Bonnell Phillips's history of slavery in the Old South was a carefully researched account that focused on social and economic aspects. While it offered important insights into antebellum Southern history, its conclusions were unfortunately tainted by the author's racist views. This reprint features a new introduction by John David Smith (U. of North Carolina at Charlotte) that places the work within the larger context of Progressive Era scholarship.
