Wetzel (Japanese, Portland State U.) provides a cogent analysis of the rich and prevalent uses of keigo , roughly translated as honorifics, or honorific language, commonly used in Japanese to indicate nuances of courtesy and respect between speakers. Her study, which will be of interest to linguists as well as specialists in Japan and Japanese, derives from extensive research of Meiji language policy, current usage, and contemporary linguistic theory, each the subject of initial chapters. In addition, a lengthy chapter discusses keigo in practical terms that will be useful for anyone who strives to achieve greater fluency in Japanese language and cultural customs.
