Introducing the life and work of Mastricht, Neele (Yale U.) demonstrates the relationship between exegesis, doctrine, elenctic, and praxis in the doctrine of God espoused in his Theoretico-practica theologia. American theologian Jonathan Edwards (1703-58) was highly influenced by that treatise, he says, so this study can also serve to illuminate the continental Reformed intellectual roots of his theology. He reviews Mastricht's life, places the treatise within the canon of his writing, and sets out its premise. Then he provides a cross-section of the doctrine of God across before focusing on details of its structure, the Quid Sit Deus, and The Holy Trinity. The study first saw light as his 2005 Th.D. dissertation for the University of Utrecht, which was published by Pretoria University Press that same year as The Art of Living to God.
