Originally published in German to accompany an exhibition at the Museum der Kulturen in Basel (which has an extraordinary collection; author Christian Kaufmann is curator for Oceania), this work presents sculptures from the area of the Korewori River in Papua, New Guinea. Kaufmann explains the ethnographic and creative contexts of the wood beings and demons carved more than 200 years ago, and he details a study expedition to the area in 1973. His text is illustrated with color photos (not particularly well reproduced) of people, landscapes and objects.
