He describes the nuclear constituents and their characteristics; nuclear interactions; and nuclear structure, including the liquid drop model approach, the nuclear shell model, and recent developments such as the nuclear mean-field and the nuclear physics of very light nuclei. Heyde includes a special section on the collective modes of motion, deformation in nuclei, nuclear physics at the extremes of stability, and subnuclear phenomena. Examinations of applications include the heaviest artificial elements in nature, the original paper on the test of parity conservation in beta-decay, and the dating of the Shroud of Turin.
