Lebra (anthropology, U. of Hawai`i) analyzes Japanese culture through different conceptualizations of the self as it exists in linguistic and spatial categories. She applies two different modes of cultural logic--"opposition logic" and "contingency logic"-- to the social layer of self, located in four "zones;" the inner self and its monologues; and the cosmological self, centering on transcendental beliefs and fantasies.
