Mendelsohn (psychiatry, Harvard Medical School) et al. outline an evidence-based time-limited group treatment approach for therapists to use with survivors of interpersonal trauma such as rape, sexual abuse, and battering. Based on a feminist understanding of gender-based violence (while applicable to groups that include men), the model is meant for clients who have achieved basic safety and stability in life and are ready to work on the ways that trauma has harmed their self-perception and relationships. They describe the prevalence and impact of interpersonal violence; current treatments; the format and structure of the group and each session; how to screen, select, and orient group members; how to help them create and work toward individualized goals; supervision; adaptations to other settings and populations; and treatment outcome data from research studies of its implementation.
