This catalogue has been published to accompany an exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston in 2004 (the exhibition was also at the Grand Palais in Paris). Works from many museums in France, the US, and 11 other countries were included in the exhibition and are reproduced here. The catalogue contains an impressive 16 essays, as well as an appendix on Gauguin in the Vollard Archives. The essays are on topics that include Gauguin as an artist and ethnographer, his sculpture, essays on each of his voyages to Tahiti and the works he produced there, his later writings, and recognition of the artist in the first half of the 20th century, Each essay is heavily illustrated with color plates of excellent quality of Gauguin's paintings, sculpture, prints, pages from his journals, and related materials.
