The war shields of Melanesia vary widely in size, shape and purpose, and each has a singular narrative, creating a unique taxonomy of objects. In this collection of about two dozen articles, contributors draw on the literature, field work and personal experience as they describe how shields show identity, power and political convictions across parts of New Guinea and the Pacific islands.
