This book makes available to a wide, English-speaking audience Cabeza de Vaca's epic firsthand narrative of the conquest of South America. Morrow (landscape architecture, U. of New Mexico) explains that the account was translated into English in 1891--roughly 336 years after it was originally published in Spanish. Although that work still holds value, the language is dated, and the translation is loose. Morrow used three Spanish versions of the book to prepare this new translation. The book includes his notes and an index as well as a section of b&w images including sketches (by Morrow himself) and other illustrations, maps, and legal documents.
