Assuming only a general knowledge of scientific concepts, this text is aimed at undergraduates and graduate students in marine biology and oceanography, but will also be useful to those in general biology, environmental science, and related fields. For graduate students, recent findings from the primary scientific literature are included. Offering a global perspective, the text presents a biological approach, but also covers physical, chemical, and geological aspects, and integrates political, social, and economic aspects of conservation. Introductory chapters explain key concepts and theories in marine environmental science and oceanography and make connections to marine biology, ecology, and conservation. Subsequent chapters address conservation issues of various marine ecosystems, such as estuaries and tropical coral reefs, and look at endangered species, cetaceans, and fisheries. There is also material on laws, agreements, and organizations. Learning features include review points, exercises, boxed readings, and cases.
