Nakata enrolled in the university to obtain the knowledge foundation he thought he needed to become a better education officer in his native Torres Straits Islands. There he found a mighty disjunct between what he knew about his people from being one and what academics knew about them from anthropological studies. Here he critiques academic approaches to understanding indigenous experience and suggests a common intellectual space where inside and outside perspectives can inform each other.
