Jay (history, U. of California-Berkeley) has named his collection of disparate essays after a similar collection by German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer published in 1851 in the aftermath of the 1848 failed revolutions across Europe. Among his perspectives are mourning a metaphor: the revolution is over, no state of grace: violence in the garden, pseudology: Derrida on Arendt and lying in politics, and still sleeping rough: Colin Wilson's The Outsider at 50.
