Stahl (reading, New York U.) and McKenna (reading, U. of Virginia) present a practical model for K-8 teachers and school personnel to use to conduct reading assessments for screening, diagnosis, and progress monitoring in each of the three tiers of response to intervention (RTI). Focusing on the assessment component of RTI (and only including an overview of instructional approaches and programs), they consider how much assessment is needed, types used in RTI, assessing areas of reading development, the process of conducting an assessment audit, assessment in each tier, how to set up and maintain a record-keeping system and communicate outcomes, implementing an RTI framework, and professional development. They organize strategies around the cognitive model of reading assessment, connect their text to the measures in the RTI framework, and include reproducibles, vignettes, and links to Common Core State Standards.
