Roskos (reading assessment and instruction, John Carroll U.) et al. present the early literacy materials selector, a tool to help teachers, administrators, and other decision makers review the features of instructional materials in early childhood classrooms using evidence-based criteria of product quality and make decisions about how to use materials for preschool/early primary literacy instruction. They outline how to plan a review, who might be involved, and types of programs to be reviewed; additional uses of the tool to enhance and extend professional development, teacher preparation, and curriculum development; and how to take an inventory of teaching materials, examine the quality of materials, analyze the guidance provided in them, and arrive at a final rating.
