While there is already a large body of literature on corporate governance available, the editors say this entry is an essential addition. Why? Because the topic has overwhelmingly focused on traditional American corporations, those publicly traded mega companies with thousands of employees. Corporate governance for small and medium-sized (SME) companies has been, the authors say, overlooked. And they contend that the omission is undeserved because those smaller businesses have emerged as the backbone of all economies, the biggest innovators in research and development, and important in generating employment. General topics in the book include: governance theory and concepts, managerial ownership in SME, boards of directors and large shareholders, governance from adolescence to maturity, and market mechanisms such as product market competition, corporate control, and the market for managers.
