This book is intended to be used to teach a one semester course on the topic of software engineering. Each chapter concludes with a number of exercises for the student. Tsui, Karam, and Bernal emphasize the concepts needed to build large, complex projects involving many programmers rather than small, one-off home projects. They begin with a historical account of why the field of software engineering came into being, how it developed, and issues of professionalism and codes of ethics. They then present the entire software life-cycle: requirements gathering and analysis; design, including software architecture and object-oriented methods; coding and coding standards; configuration management during builds; testing techniques; and releases and software support issues. Each of these topics is given at least one chapter. Important issues that affect all stages of software development are also covered. There is a chapter on the various process models in current use such as the waterfall, incremental, and spiral models. Following that is a chapter on process methodologies with an emphasis on the agile approach. There is no bibliography per se but each chapter ends with a suggested reading list.
