Nelson (epidemiology, international health, and medicine, Johns Hopkins U.) and Williams (epidemiology, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases) assemble 28 chapters on the epidemiology of infectious disease. Epidemiologists mainly from Maryland address methods in infectious disease epidemiology, including its history, general principles, study design, outbreak epidemiology, geographic information systems, microbiology tools, molecular epidemiology, the immune system and host defense, vaccines, nutrition, and healthcare-associated infections; diseases of airborne and oral transmission, such as the flu, measles, meningococcal infections, tuberculosis, acute respiratory infections, diarrheal diseases, and spongiform encephalopathies; blood and body fluids as reservoirs: and vector-borne and parasite diseases like Lyme disease and helminth infections. All chapters have been revised to reflect current knowledge, concepts, and approaches, and new information on malaria, HIV/AIDS, models of behavior change, and sexually transmitted diseases are included.
