This textbook grew out of a course in which St. Clair and Visick teach students of both biology and computer science about using bioinformatics to make meaningful use of the mountains of genetic and genomic data now available. For the second edition, they have replaced the PERL programming language with flexible pseudocode, though the PERL code is still available on the website. They have also made the algorithms more central to chapters so the book can be used in courses that do not require programming. Among the topics are the computational manipulation of DNA: genetic screening for disease alleles, substitution matrices and protein alignments: virulence factors in E. coli, sequence-based gene prediction: annotation of a resistance plasmid, and nucleic acid structure prediction: polymerase chain reaction and RNA interference.
