Ackerman and Knox present a textbook for an introductory undergraduate course for students who need not be majoring in meteorology or atmospheric sciences, though such a course could also serve as a foundation for later study. They focus on the atmosphere as one interacting element in the total Earth system, which means they also devote considerable attention to oceans from the perspective of atmosphere. Among the topics are the energy cycle, water in the atmosphere, air masses and fronts, extra-tropical cyclones and anticlones, human influences on climate, and climate forecasting.
