Miller presents an English translation and extended commentary on a short, anonymous Icelandic story from about 1220 about an Icelandic farmhand who bought a polar bear in Greenland to give to the king of Denmark. Among his perspectives are helping Thorir and buying the bear, dealing with King Harald, saying no to kings, eggs in one basket and market value, back to Harald and the yielding of accounts, richness and risk, gaming the system, regiving and reclaiming gifts, gifts upward: repaying by receiving and funny money, and of free and closing gifts.
