Levinge, a music therapist and researcher specializing in working with children with early developmental difficulties, mothers and infants, bereaved children and families, and those with terminal illnesses, combines the theories of pediatrician and psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott with her experiences in music therapy settings to describe the music therapy relationship. She provides background on the ideas and thinking of individuals involved in the development of the school of object relations, including Freud, Melanie Klein, and John Bowlby, and discusses the influence of Winnicott's early years and love of music on his professional development; the elements and impact of music; and specific concepts of Winnicott and how they can be used to clarify music therapy processes: holding, play, transitional objects and transitional phenomena, aggression and hate, and the sense of self.
