After a literature overview, this book gives instructions and lists of materials for suggested teaching strategies. Issues related to assessment, such as sharing assessment information with parents and children, are discussed. The chapter on phonics instruction for English language learners moves beyond classroom-based strategies by examining activities that can be recommended to families to support reading at home. A final chapter provides print and web resources to support instruction. Discussion questions and activities for professional development are included. The book is intended for literacy coaches, readings specialists, classroom teachers, administrators, and participants in professional development initiatives or in-service programs within schools or school districts. There is no subject index. The book is one of five professional development books, each addressing one major component of literacy instruction identified by the National Reading Panel (2002).
