The papers in this volume were inspired by a 2003 meeting in Germany. They cover several aspects of Christianity in Africa, both from Europeans and native Africans. Some are strictly academic reportage. Others are imbued with the personal faith of the author. Adogame (religious studies, University of Edinburgh), Gerloff (director, Centre for Black ad White Christian Partnership, Birmingham UK) and Hock (History of Religions, University of Rostock, Germany) begin with the historical background of post-colonial missions, particularly those established after the 1884 arbitrary division of the sub-Saharan continent by the European powers. Articles treat the various denominations from Europe and how they influenced the colonial movement. Once the background has been established the papers discuss particular cases: how AIDS has affected African Christianity, the use of the Internet to proselytize, the growth of missions from Pentecostal and evangelical churches and the growth of African-based denominations such as Kimbaguism. The practice of Christianity throughout the African diaspora, from the earliest slave ships, to the economic and educational emigrants, is discussed in several chapters.
