This medical atlas is intended by Jackler (otolaryngology and neurosurgery, Stanford U. School of Medicine) to provide an overview of the technical aspects of operative neurotology and skull base surgery, which is generally undertaken to provide access to inaccessible intracranial disease located adjacent to the brain stem. The emphasis of the atlas is on surgical illustrations, with text limited to concise descriptions of operative techniques. For the new edition, several hundred additional images have been included and the scope has been expanded beyond illustrations of operative exposure to encompass the technical maneuvers employed in the actual microsurgical removal of tumors. Additionally, the new edition reflects the trend toward less invasive and more function-sparing strategies and the development of new technologies.
