Davies (pediatrics, human development) and Fitzgerald (psychology--both are at Michigan State U.) have compiled a thought-provoking resource on this epidemic. The articles are research-based, with studies cited and analysis provided in language accessible to parents, teachers, and social and public health workers. Vol.1 is on medical, biological, and social issues, with initial chapters describing the epidemiology and causes of childhood obesity and later chapters examining contexts, including the built environment in which children live, and social inequality. The media, public perception, and nutrition are other topics in Vol.1. Among the topics discussed in Vol.2, which is devoted to understanding development and prevention, are risk factors for obesity in early human development; the role of physical activity; obesity among American Indian, Alaska Native, African Americans, and Latinos; and surgical treatment. Throughout, the authors offer practical advice and applications.
