Examining the work of various contemporary artists across seven individual essays, Blocker (art history, U. of Minnesota) explores a range of issues that arise within theories of witness, in particular the relationship between visibility and invisibility as related to the way the art in question addresses such things as the ideology of the legitimate witness, the privilege and hegemonic power of official testimony, the politics of the ideal witness, and the ways in which that witness is modeled after the disembodied camera.
