Traditionally, African Americans have sought collective liberation, equity and justice through education. This tradition continues, judging by the contributors to this collection of 19 essays, with schools and programs designed to give young people the tools of knowledge, problem-solving and activism. Topics include the theoretical basis of projecting imagination beyond circumstance, including the content of instruction in Freedman's School, the contribution of citizenship schools in the struggle for both literacy and freedom, citizenship education programs in Georgia from 1960 to 1975, Ella Baker's contributions to the concept of teaching as politics, lessons from the 1960s (including summer Freedom School programs, the Black Panther schools, and SNCC pedagogy), and contemporary expressions of education for liberation, such as the Sunflower County Freedom Project, Project Daniel, the Bushwick School for Social Justice and the Children's Defense Fund.
