Scholarly attention even in the US is once more focusing on Max Horkheimer's Institut für Sozialforschung, one of Western Marxism's most productive and celebrated intellectual coteries, says Wheatland (German history, Assumption College, Massachusetts), but little has been written about the dynamics of its reception, assimilation, and confrontation set in motion when the ideas and sensibilities were exported to American culture and society. The School relocated to Columbia University in New York 1934-50 to escape the Nazis. He takes up that story as a case study in the recent transatlantic history of ideas.
