Door-to-door campaigns for state legislative and local office provide an opportunity for voters to directly confront the candidate and for candidates and voters to persuade and learn from one another. That at least is how Read (political science, College of St. Benedict and St. John's U.) experienced it as he ran for the Minnesota House of Representatives in 1992, in a race which he narrowly lost. In this memoir, he reconstructs the political conversations he had with voters in the rural, socially conservative area near St. Paul and advocates for the value of door-to-door campaigning where it is demographically feasible.
