To take advantage of the computer software currently available, especially WinBUGS, Carlin (U. of Minnesota) and Thomas A. Louis (public health, Johns Hopkins U.) have updated their textbook for graduate or advanced undergraduate statistics courses in any field that uses them. Earlier editions appeared in 1996 and 2000. They now introduce Markov chain Monte Carlo thinking and related data analysis techniques right up front in the basic Bayes chapter. No previous exposure to Bayes or empirical Bayes methods is assumed, though students with a graduate-level foundation in statistics will find their way paved more smoothly.
